Statistics Calculator
Calculate mean, median, mode, variance, and standard deviation from a list of numbers.
Usage examples
Checking a statistics homework answer
Paste a dataset from a textbook problem to quickly verify the mean, variance, and standard deviation you calculated by hand.
Summarizing survey or test scores
Paste a list of scores to see the mean, median, mode, and spread at a glance.
Comparing variability between two datasets
Calculate the standard deviation of two different number lists to see which one is more spread out.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between population and sample variance?
Population variance divides the sum of squared differences by the total count (n), and is correct when your list is the entire group you care about. Sample variance divides by n − 1 instead, which corrects for bias when your list is only a sample used to estimate a larger population's variance. If you're not sure which applies, sample variance is the more common choice for real-world data collected from a subset of a larger group.
Why is sample standard deviation shown as N/A for a single number?
Sample variance divides by n − 1, which is zero when there's only one value — that division is undefined, so there's no meaningful sample standard deviation to show. Population standard deviation is still calculated and is simply 0 for a single value.
What happens if I type something that isn't a number?
Non-numeric entries are ignored and excluded from the calculation. If nothing you entered could be parsed as a number, you'll see a validation message instead of results.
