Usage examples

Shrinking a scanned document PDF

Is a PDF scanned from a multifunction printer too big to email? Compressing it can shrink the size enough to attach.

Submitting to a site with an upload size limit

Hitting a file size limit on a submission site? Raise the compression level to get under the limit.

Reducing the size of a photo-heavy report

Has a PDF report full of photos gotten too heavy? Lowering the quality slightly saves storage space.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Compression happens entirely in your browser, and the file is never sent to a server.

How does this reduce the file size?

Each page is re-rendered as an image and saved as a fairly compressed JPEG. That means it works much better on scan-like, photo-heavy PDFs than on ordinary documents made of text and vector shapes.

Can I still select or search text after compressing?

No. Every page becomes an image, so text selection, copying, and search are lost. This is best suited to PDFs you're already treating like a scanned document.

Which compression level should I pick?

Pick 'Maximum compression' to shrink the file as much as possible, or 'High quality' to keep the look as close to the original as possible. 'Balanced' gives a reasonable result for most cases.
