Metal Weight Calculator

Calculate the weight of plates, round bars, pipes, and more from their dimensions and material.

Weight

—

Enter dimensions and material

Usage examples

Working out weight for a steel quote

Enter round bar or plate dimensions to get an accurate weight before placing a material order, so it can be factored into a quote.

Estimating pipe shipping cost

Enter a pipe's outer diameter, wall thickness, and length to get its weight, then estimate freight costs that are priced by weight.

Comparing weight across materials

See how much lighter or heavier the same part would be if switched from steel to aluminum or stainless steel.

Frequently asked questions

Can this calculate structural shapes like H-beams or angles?

No. This calculator only supports simple cross-sections: plate, round bar, square/rect bar, tube, and hex bar. For standardized structural shapes like H-beams, channels, or angles, refer to the manufacturer's or standard's cross-sectional area table instead.

Where do the density values come from?

They're typical room-temperature average densities. Actual alloy composition and heat treatment can shift this by 1-2%. For precise work, enter the density from your mill test report (MTR) using the 'Custom' option.

For pipe weight, should I enter wall thickness or inner diameter?

Enter whichever you know. If you enter wall thickness, inner diameter is computed as outer diameter minus twice the wall thickness; if you already know the inner diameter, you can enter that directly instead.

Could the result differ from the actual purchased weight?

Yes. Manufacturing tolerances, rolling allowances, and cutting losses mean actual weight can differ slightly from the calculated value. For exact order quantities, also check your supplier's weight table.
