Usage examples
Turning a blog title into a URL
Turn a title like "Our Summer Trip 2024!" into a clean URL slug like "our-summer-trip-2024".
Cleaning up a title with accented characters
Convert a title like "Café São Paulo" into an ASCII-safe slug like "cafe-sao-paulo".
Building filenames or identifiers that use underscores
Some systems prefer underscores over hyphens — switch the separator to get a slug you can drop straight into a filename or code identifier.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work with Korean, Japanese, or Chinese text?
Accented Latin characters (café → cafe) convert cleanly to ASCII, but entirely different writing systems like Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or Hindi can't be transliterated this way. Those characters are stripped from the result, so a title mixing in non-Latin text may produce a shorter slug than you expect.
What happens with repeated separators?
Consecutive separators are collapsed into one, and any separator at the very start or end is removed. For example, "Hello---World" becomes "hello-world".
Are numbers kept as-is?
Yes. Numbers are kept just like letters — only punctuation, spaces, and other URL-unsafe characters get replaced with the separator.
