Container Loading Calculator
Estimate how many boxes fit into a shipping container.
Boxes per container

boxes (weight is the limiting factor)
Volume-based: 33,081,185 · Weight-based: 2,820
Usage examples
Estimating how many containers an export shipment needs
Enter your box dimensions and total quantity to estimate upfront how many 20ft or 40ft containers you'll need, for logistics planning.
Comparing loading efficiency across box orientations
The same box can fit differently depending on whether it's laid flat or on its side — this tool automatically finds the orientation (of 6 possible) that fits the most boxes.
Checking whether weight limits you before volume does
Even if there seems to be room by volume, you can't exceed the container's maximum payload — instantly see whether volume or weight is the actual limiting factor.
Frequently asked questions
Will my real-world loading differ from this result?
Yes, possibly. This calculator assumes simple grid stacking with every box in the same orientation. In practice, mixing orientations or using pallets can sometimes fit a few more.
Where do the container dimensions and payload limits come from?
They're typical published internal dimensions and maximum payloads for standard 20ft, 40ft, and 40ft High Cube containers per ISO 668. Specific carriers or individual containers may vary slightly.
Why does a 40ft container carry less payload than a 20ft one?
Because the container itself (its tare weight) is heavier. The total gross weight limit is similar, but a heavier tare weight leaves less room for actual cargo weight.
