AWG gives wire diameter; steel sheet gauge (MSG) gives plain steel sheet thickness. Galvanized steel and aluminum use different gauge tables and aren't covered here.
Usage examples
Converting an AWG number from a wire spec sheet to mm
See the actual wire diameter in mm for an AWG number printed on a component datasheet.
Finding out what gauge a sheet of steel is
Enter a thickness measured with calipers (in mm) to find the nearest standard sheet metal gauge number.
Converting a gauge callout on a foreign drawing to mm
Convert a material spec given in American gauge numbers into millimeters for a local purchase order.
Frequently asked questions
Are AWG and steel sheet gauge (MSG) the same standard?
No. AWG is a separate standard for wire diameter, and steel sheet gauge (Manufacturers' Standard Gage) is a different standard for sheet thickness. The same gauge number means a different actual size in each system.
Does this support galvanized steel or aluminum gauge?
No. Galvanized steel and aluminum have different thickness-per-gauge tables than plain steel, and we couldn't confidently verify reliable figures for them, so they're excluded here.
What formula does the AWG calculation use?
The standard formula d(mm) = 0.127 × 92^((36−AWG)/39), cross-checked against published AWG reference tables.
What if my measured thickness doesn't exactly match a standard gauge?
The size-to-gauge mode finds the nearest standard gauge number. Real stock may vary slightly from the nominal table value.
